Today we’re looking at a Whirlpool refrigerator where the complaint is that it’s not making any ice. This is a very common issue that we get from customers calling us. It’s usually a fairly straight forward process to fix, if you’re so inclined, and that’s what we’re going to discuss here. However, for those who are NOT so inclined, we remind you that we’re always available to help you at Appliance Master – just check the website at www.appliancerepairtucsonaz.org.
So the first thing I do is I open up the unit, I can hear noise coming from the ice maker itself. So I am just going to open it up and verify that I have proper voltage first. We are going to remove the cover for the ice maker and then with my photometer, just going to put one of my leads at the L and then one at the neutral and I just want to verify that I have power to it and I have a hundred and twenty one point eight volts. So I know everything is fine, everything is getting proper voltage and in order to repair this, we are just going to have to replace that ice maker. I can hear it trying to run, it’s just not running.
So what we will do now is remove the ice bucket so we can access everything for the icemaker, pull it right out.. So with that out, we can unscrew this, a quarter inch screw at the bottom and then two quarter inch screws here at the top that hold the icemaker in place, go ahead and remove those. Just going to loosen those top two. So it will be easier to reinstall a new icemaker, lift it up and off and there we go and now we can access our thermostat, our fuse and then we are going to press in the tab for the icemaker, the power supply, it locks in place, we are just going to press in the tab and then pull the wires out and we have our icemaker out.
So now we are going to go down and transfer some of the necessary parts onto the new icemaker from the old icemaker and then we will reinstall. We have our two icemakers on the floor, our old one and the new one, basically everything is identical on it, the only thing that we are going to need to transfer is the arm on the old one. We are going to remove that from the fill cup area here first, this pulls out and then I am going to use my screwdriver and just pry it out there and now we are going to do the exact opposite on the new icemaker. Just slide it into position as far as it will go and then go to our fill cup and push that in there, we will make sure it functions, that it stays off and then on. So now we can go ahead and install this in the freezer.
Now we are ready to install our new icemaker, I am going to do everything in the reverse fashion. So we are going to connect our power supply first, that’s just going to slide right in, snap in, put our fuse in place and then from there, we are going to make sure our fill tube is into the fill cup and then get our mounting screws in place, the two that we just loosened up. So now we can go ahead and tighten those two up then we have the one screw at the very bottom that we have taken out all the way.
Now the last thing to do, we have to make sure that the icemaker is going to operate and fill because it’s warm, it won’t cycle on it’s own. So I have a jumper wire, I am going to jump out the motor to the neutral and in about five seconds, it will snap and then the icemaker will continue to fill on its own in about twenty seconds. We are going to listen to a hum and that’s how we know that the icemaker is filled with water. So at this point here, we can just go ahead… I am going to put the icemaker cover on the head, this snaps on and we are just going to wait for that icemaker to fill.
The icemaker is filled with water, the last thing for us to do is to put the ice bucket back in, make sure it’s on the on position and once the first batch of ice is made, we will dispose of it in case there are any contaminants that were in the new icemaker.
